“The most attractive thing about Heathhall was the size of the building and the fact that I could change the layout to my specifications. The team at Heathhall have refurbished the unit to fit my needs, which has been really useful. They’ve done a lot of work.”

About Active Therapy Dumfries

Sports therapist and business owner, Richard McConville, uses a variety of techniques to treat chronic and acute pain, sports injuries and postural imbalances, from his clinic in Dumfries.

Richard’s fitness career began when he took his passion for weightlifting to the next level, qualifying as a gym instructor and Olympic weightlifting coach in 2003. After sustaining an injury in the gym, Richard was inspired to help others undergo successful rehabilitation and retrained as a sports therapist.

Richard now employs a holistic approach to treatment across the board, helping everyone from athletes to new mums, to overcome chronic pain and recover from injury.

A Tailored Approach to Treatment

The range of treatments on offer at Active Therapy aren’t just for sportspeople. Whether a recent injury is keeping you on the bench, or you’re struggling with everyday back pain, Richard can build a tailored treatment programme around your specific needs.

“At Active Therapy Dumfries, it’s all a part of the treatment. Firstly, you’ll be assessed as an individual, using diagnostic tools like ultrasound and MRI to find out what’s going on. We can then tailor your treatment, using the therapies we know will be most effective for you.”

Techniques used include osteopathic manipulation, active isolated stretching (AIS), compression therapy, medical acupuncture, sports massage and pregnancy massage.

Reasons for Moving

After five years based in a local community centre, Active Therapy Dumfries had outgrown its single-room clinic. With an already established client base and an increasing demand for his services, Richard needed more facilities to accommodate his growing business.

The original premises consisted of a single treatment room and there was no space for a waiting area. This meant customers often had to wait in the corridor before their treatments.

And like many small business owners, Richard’s own skills are at the heart of his business. With demands on his time growing, Richard was struggling to see all of his clients and make time to focus on administrative tasks and business development. But his clinic was too small to accommodate any extra staff.

A New Space to Grow at Heathhall

Richard came to Heathhall looking for new premises with more treatment rooms, a customer waiting area and excellent motorway access for his broad customer base. He needed somewhere that offered the flexibility his growing business needed and was convenient for his clients.

“It took ages to find suitable premises. It had to be somewhere with ample parking and good access, that also ticked all the other boxes.”

The new Active Therapy unit at Heathhall consists of three, newly refurbished treatment rooms and a separate waiting area. Clients now have a comfortable place to wait before their treatments and Richard has enough space to welcome two additional therapists to his clinic.

Choosing Heathhall

From the new, larger unit at Heathhall, Richard has been able to accommodate two additional therapists within his clinic, one supporting his own sports therapy work and another specialising in rehabilitation.

“My biggest challenge is having enough time to see everyone, which is why it’s going to be useful having another two therapists in the clinic. It’s important that people receive treatment as soon as possible, especially if they’re battling chronic pain or experiencing acute pain from a recent injury.”

Not only will the new therapists help to reduce customer waiting times, but they’ll also free up time for Richard to focus on business development and improving his online presence.

Supporting Our Local Rugby Talent

As well as treating clients from his Active Therapy clinic in Dumfries, Richard has been providing Dumfries Saints Rugby Football Club with dedicated medical support for over five years.

“I’ve been working with the club since 2012, attending training sessions twice a week and treating any injuries that crop up. On game-day, I’ll make sure the team are prepared and apply sports tape beforehand, then be on hand to provide pitchside first aid.”
