The Benefits Of A Spring Clean

Your inner voice will have sung the praises of a spring clean in the past no doubt and improved your mental and physical health too, but you might be surprised by just how much good it does the average human.

Let’s start with the most dramatic reason for a spring clean. Most accidents happen in the home and while this is highly unlikely, going over and above by putting stuff in storage reduces the risk of you tripping up on it and injuring yourself. Even minor toe-stubbing incidents are enough to send you hurtling toward the freezer in search of Viennetta to either smear on it or eat.

A spring clean is a must for allergy sufferers too of course with dust, mould, mildew, and pet hair being the enemy. A deep clean boosts your immune system because keeping allergies at bay can help you breathe better thereby preventing respiratory issues which your immune system will thank you for in the long run.

Clutter can do for your mental health what King Kong did for New York. Decluttering reduces stress and depression and this is even more pertinent right now for obvious reasons and if you happen to be working from home there’s no room to swing a cat.

Some studies show a link between a clean home and leading more of an active life, healthier food choices etc and when you think about it, a spring clean is the same as cutting a toxic relationship out of your life. It might improve your attention span too.

The Benefits Of Self-Storage

Having less stuff under your feet frees up your mind and helps you focus simply because you can’t see it. And it being securely under lock and key and protected from theft is therefore also one less thing you have to worry about.

Your valuables will still be waiting for you just as soon as you need them and you can fall in love with them all over again once you’re reunited.

Reclaim that spare room for post-pandemic houseguests and while the stuff is in storage you can also reimagine your home décor and then gradually reintroduce your stored items as and when, or when they’re stylish again.

It’s amazing how much room the Christmas tree takes up and all its goddam baubles so why not pack them off on a little 11-month holiday in storage too and be done with it.

Downsizing for retirement but you don’t want to have a lot of stuff getting under your feet until you organise your new compact home? Then bung it all in storage until you have settled in and then see what’s what.

Packing Up For Storage During A Spring Clean – Our Ten Commandments:

  1. Make an inventory map of your items.
  2. If you’re swithering over an item but haven’t used it in the last year, send it packing.
  3. Tackle one room at a time, perhaps one a day even, otherwise you’ll get into a mess and feel like jacking the whole thing in.
  4. Keep track of your items by using labels and transparent containers and store clothes in plastic boxes too so they don’t gather dust.
  5. Rolling up your clothes before you put them in storage will help you avoid crease marks and help you fit more clothes in.
  6. Make sure heavier items are placed first to ensure a solid packing base and if you have items that you might need to access, pack them at the front for easy access.
  7. Try to use strong boxes that are the same or similar size to utilise your space better and fit more items in. Fill up all the boxes to keep them strong.
  8. Store paintings and mirrors upright to prevent damage and pack books flat to protect their spines.
  9. Be careful of packing items in sealed plastic bags as this might act as an open invitation to Mr and Mrs Mildew.
  10. Be ruthless.
