The late burst of summer weather might’ve enabled you to squeeze in a few more jaunts in your caravan, camper van, motorhome, or boat, but time and tide wait for none of us, and the darker days of autumn and winter will soon be upon us. And this may present many of you with a storage issue.

Storing your boat or caravan outside or close to your home yourself means the additional expense of fitting it with a cover, but it may be exposed to more than the elements if targeted by thieves or vandals. Even if your garage can accommodate it, parking your car outside isn’t the best idea in the winter with those early morning starts. You might also get the neighbours’ backs up if it’s causing an obstruction or blocking out their light.
Caravan, camper van, motor home and boat storage tips
Here are some tips that you might want to refer back to when you’re preparing for storage with Heathhall Business Centre.
Gleaming is good
Giving your boat or caravan a thorough wash-down just before you wave it off for winter is the caring and sensible thing to do. It’ll save you time when you pick it up from us next spring, plus algae and barnacles can form on boats. This might also show any repairs that you need to make a note of that you can organise while it’s hibernating at Heathhall.
A good going over includes fridges – breeding grounds for mould and bacteria, so always best to leave the door ajar after cleaning.
If you have a toilet on your boat or caravan, please ensure it’s been emptied and sterilised. Antifreeze in the bowl will prevent it from cracking or freezing.
Safe is sound
This means isolating the gas and electricity supplies. Likewise, remove any batteries, clean them, and if necessary fill them with electrolytes. All gas bottles should also be removed for separate storage.
Drain all the water from boats, either by disconnecting the pumps or emptying tanks and pipes, and leaving taps open in caravans and boats ensures that all water is removed, should temperatures plummet to freezing.
If it moves, remove it
The general rule of thumb is that you should store anything portable separately, such as electrical items, if they’re removable. We’re talking TVs, radios, and stuff like GPS equipment. This also applies to soft furnishings that can attract mould and mildew.
Anything that might rust, freeze, corrode or suffer winter damage should not be left in your boat or caravan either.
