Time to start thinking about a pre-Christmas declutter

Right now is the ideal time for a pre-Christmas declutter utilising the self storage units at Dumfries Self Storage! It’s all about simplifying your home life and keeping stress levels low at a time of year when they can easily skyrocket.

And just think of how much airier, cleaner and functional it will all feel once the Christmas decorations come down and you’re facing a brand new year in a decluttered home with all that clutter that might have held you back, psychologically, safely secured in our self storage facilities. The received wisdom about environment reflecting state of mind tells us that this will help you stick to New Year resolutions or strengthen your resolve if turning over a new leaf.

Less stuff makes Christmas easier to cope with

The last thing you want is for the fun of keeping busy to tip over into feeling stressed and overwhelmed and this can be hindered by having too much stuff around at Christmas, like rooms filled with too much furniture, especially of the occasional kind, and cupboards stuffed to the brim! Wishing you’d taken action earlier! Use the rental storage space provided by Dumfries Self Storage instead!

Choose your rooms carefully

Even starting in advance on a decluttering/self storage mission, it’s still perhaps not a good idea to do a top-to-bottom declutter or you might just end up losing the will to live if you give yourself too higher a mountain to climb. You might want to look at one room at a time, and make a list, even if you’re not the list-making type! Just because it’s not too thorough doesn’t make it any less effective.

The kids’ bedrooms

Perhaps consider putting some of your kids’ older toys in storage if you don’t have time to pass them on via donation or reselling, or neither you – nor the kids – can bear to get rid of them. It might be quite a fun activity to get the kids involved with too, like telling them some of their stuff is off for winter hibernation or something! And even if some of it ends up being donated, it will teach them the virtue of giving to others.

The lounge

If you’re planning on having lots of people over for Christmas dinner or Hogmanay, you might also want to make sure that there’s enough space for people to feel comfortable and sit comfortably. This might mean that you  temporarily remove some furniture from your lounge and store it with Dumfries Self Storage where it will be safe and sound. This might also inspire you to think about a room redesign in the new year!

Moving some of your old books into storage for a while rather than giving them away on a whim is another good idea, plus it will make room for any new ones you might receive this Christmas.

Most living rooms are arranged so that every seat has a good view of the TV, but at Christmas, consider giving the tree this prime focus by doing some rejigging of the furniture and that’s why you might have to lose some temporarily. A big Christmas tree takes up a lot of space!

The kitchen

The beating heart of any family Christmas, if you’re kitchen’s full of gadgets gathering dust and taking up valuable worktop or cupboard space, these may be the first casualties of the declutter. Then you’ve got more room for preparation and plating up at Christmas!

It’s all about making it leaner and fitter and more match-fit for the onslaught of what’s to come – and this includes popping all the plates and pots and pans that will be redundant in storage too. You probably only want matching stuff.

Then there’s the junk drawer. What a fantastic opportunity to finally tackle your own little Mount Kilimanjaro, which might have some stuff you can recycle or donate, plus some other stuff you don’t want to part with permanently. This might be the most satisfying job of all. Perhaps even better than Christmas!

The guest bedroom(s)

It’s not just the room itself that you might want to think about when considering stuff for self storage but the wardrobes as well.  Think guest house. You want the room to be homely of course, but not so much as to alienate your guests so they can’t make it their home from home, or stand in the way of you providing a clean, tidy and functional place to stay.

If your guest bedroom doubles up as a home office, start by packing up your paperwork and storing it safely and securely with Dumfries Self Storage too.
