Ensure your furniture is spick and span
Preparation is everything when you’re preparing furniture for self-storage and that means cleaning. It’s time to roll up those sleeves and give it some welly to clean your furniture correctly (including ensuring it’s dried properly) to keep it in tip-top condition during its self-storage vacation.
We’re talking rigorous here. Get that crevice tool acquainted with as many nooks and crannies as you can. You’re the crumb police. You don’t want any dirt or debris tagging along for the ride, likewise spills of any kind. Especially sugary ones.
A thorough scrub with mild soap and water should do it for wooden and plastic furniture, or you could use oil soap for added protection.
Make light work of fabrics and leathers with a good upholstery cleaner, and you’re going to have to muster a little more elbow grease with metal objects to remove oxidisation and delay tarnish build-up.
Furniture polish, wax or fabric protectors are belts to the braces.
Let’s break it down further for you
We encourage you to maximise space in your self-storage unit and that’s where disassembling furniture wherever possible comes in.
There’s all the usual suspects, desks and bookshelves and beds, and removing drawers and legs etc., but some bulkier items of furniture like sofas can also be broken down into smaller parts, and then stacked in a space-saving way.
It can also be a good idea to take photos during the process and to lay your hands on a wee bag for all the fiddly screws, bolts and hinges so that they don’t end up scattered to the four winds.
Remember to stack the components of one piece of furniture together so you know to which item of furniture they belong or better still, label label label.
Hubble bubble no toil or trouble
Bubble wrap is a godsend if you’ve got glass or mirrors adorning your furniture and so quick and easy to do. Wrap them safely mind, and then again with dust sheets etc. Handily, all of this can be found in our wee Aladdin’s cave: our Box Shop.
And don’t leave other items of furniture to the air either. Wrapping chairs, sofas, desks and other large items loosely with a fabric cover allows them to breathe in storage. Let all that lovely air circulate so that wooden furniture doesn’t swell.
There’s method in our storage
Heavier items at the bottom and lighter items higher up with all items that you might need first within easy reach. That’s about the dimensions of our advice when it comes to packing furniture in your storage unit, well, that and to beware sharp edges anywhere near delicate upholstered bits.
Some pieces of furniture are made to stand the way you use them. Sofas on their side for an extended time can exert pressure on the joints and might cause damage over time.
And, just as you wouldn’t overfill your washing machine, best not to stuff too much furniture into your storage unit either.
