Winter weather can be icky, making moving a bit more problematic, but the good news is that you might get a far cheaper deal from removal companies if you’re prepared to shop around, so what’s a bit of discomfort if you’re able to tighten this bit of the budget? Preparing your old home for the new owner
Leaving behind all the instructions for the boiler and the washing machine and the location of the stopcock is a very courteous gesture, likewise labelling keys if there’s a big jailer’s bunch of them. It’s a good idea to request this as a condition as part of your purchase agreement so that your buyer does the same.
Update your contacts
Update your contacts, and you might have to sit and give this one some serious thought so that you don’t have any glaring omissions above the obvious roll call of doctor, dentist etc. Your employer and kid’s school will need your address details, for example, especially if you’re listed as an emergency contact. Then there’s your mobile phone provider and bank to update, plus the DVLA too of course. What a palaver, but worth it in the end when you’re all cosy spending your first winter in your new gaff.
Don’t forget the meter readings
Sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget them when you’ve so many other things to juggle. Taking photos on your phone of the readings is a good idea and many utility companies accept them nowadays, and if the property into which you’re moving has been vacant for any length of time, perhaps see if you or someone else could get early access to turn on the heating, reducing the risk of pipes freezing. Plus it’s more pleasant to move into.
