Meet the Tenant – UniGreenScheme

Meet Nenad Denkov. Nenad is the Scotland Business Manager for UniGreenScheme – the asset resale service for universities.

UniGreenScheme’s mission is very simple. They want to help UK universities reduce waste, consume resources sustainably, and enable research organisations to thrive in an increasingly resource-constrained world.

Heathhall branch serving Scotland

The Dumfries branch of UniGreenScheme was established to serve northern England and Scottish universities, and Nenad recently joined the team from a background in hospitality and security industries. Originally from Serbia, Nenad moved to Scotland with his family in 2008, having been employed in Belgrade.

A typical week for Nenad is a busy mix of office based work, processing orders and proposals, and collecting equipment from universities across the country.

Circular Economy

“What we do here at UniGreenScheme really embodies the so-called circular economy. Universities often have lab and other equipment for specific research or other projects, often for a set period of time. When that project reaches its end, they’re left with often really high value equipment that they literally can’t give away, due to the potential liability of the equipment failing in some way. What we do is remove the risk from the educational institution, help them free up space in their buildings and save them time by handling the removal, processing and onward distribution of the equipment”

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Zero Waste Scotland encourages innovation that supports re-use. Although often confused, re-use and recycling are not the same. Re-use of products and materials is more beneficial as it retains a product’s value by keeping it in use for longer. This minimises waste, creates jobs, has positive social impact and reduces consumption and associated carbon impacts. Some of the equipment collected by UniGreenScheme is as new and barely used, with plenty of life left. They often tend to be bulky items.

Great location at Heathhall Business Centre

“We’ve quickly outgrown our space here at Heathhall Business Centre, and it’s such a great location for us in every way, with links to arterial routes up and down the country, that we’ve just moved to much bigger units on the estate, at Units 4 and 5 on Bomber Harris Green”

Wagg This Way to 272 Hurricane Road

Our newest tenants, dog lovers Harley Quinn and Chris Herd, started Dumfries doggy daycare business Wagg this Way in May 2019, and have already built up a regular four-legged clientele at their newly refurbished and spotless premises at Unit 272 Hurricane Road.

Having trained in animal care and vet nursing, Harley had always harboured a passion for her own business working with dogs, and when the former doggy daycare premises became available she and partner Chris jumped at the opportunity.

Since May, Harley and Chris have made major improvements to the centre, which now boasts fully resurfaced play areas and the introduction of some great new play facilities – even a ‘scentsory’ garden with mint and other dog-safe herbs to help the dogs ‘see the world through their nose’ or even have a nibble on!

Happy Dogs at Wagg This Way

It’s important to Harley and Chris that dog owners can drop their four-legged members of the family off at Wagg this Way safe in the knowledge that they’ll be safe, clean, and exercised. We caught up with Harley recently to see the centre in action:

“It’s so important to us that the dogs in our care have safe spaces to not just play but also to have some quiet time if they need it. Our daily routine includes nap times for the dogs as well as play time. A tired dog is a happy dog! As well as our play areas including paddling pools, climbing frames and tunnels we have beds, sofas and even open crates for dogs who are used to them”

Strict Hygiene

Harley continued:

“We keep the centre spotlessly clean. My background and qualifications in animal care mean that I know the importance of strict hygiene and cleanliness. All areas are disinfected daily with proper vet approved disinfectant and drinking water bowls are replenished every three hours. We have a first aid kit on hand for any minor mishaps that might occur. Touch wood we never need it, but accidents to happen and it’s good to know that your dog is in safe hands should a situation arise.

We think of Wagg This Way as a safe ‘free roaming day centre’ for dogs – they’re never locked away and we have several areas that dogs can explore including a quiet room for tired dogs or a dog who just wants some time away from everyone else”

Future Plans

Chris and Harley plough every penny they can back in to improving the facilities at Wagg This Way. Future plans include extending the play areas with a grass covered area to create a ‘home from home garden’ feel. Our commercial property units are flexible and can be modified to suit your business.

Wagg This Way offer either 5 hour daycare sessions or full day sessions from 7.30am to 6pm. All dogs will be assessed before being accepted to doggy daycare and up to date annual vaccination certificate must be provided.

3 Signs You’re Ready To Expand Your Business

Building your own business takes vision, energy and commitment. At Heathhall Business Centre we pride ourselves on fostering new entrepreneurial talent and helping local businesses to grow in our central business hub.

But once you’re up and running, how do you know when it’s time to take the next step? Look for these 3 signs that it’s time to expand.

1. You Need A Bigger Premises

Are you struggling to store enough stock or have enough working space for your team?

Your business can’t grow efficiently without enough physical space. Inadequate storage space isn’t just a day to day inconvenience but will cost your business money as you’ll need to order stock more regularly to keep up with regular demand or else risk losing your customers to the competition.

Our business storage units are all available with flexible lease agreements – so you can take on more or less space to suit your requirements.

2. Your Business Is Seasonal

Does your business rely on a particular season or festive period for its main source of income? If you’re starting to feel the pinch during quieter months, monitor seasonal cycles and develop alternative revenue streams to tide you over during the off-season.

Whether you specialise in gluten-free Christmas puds or bespoke barbecue builds, it makes sense to phase in your big expansion across peak trading months. This is when your cash flow will be most healthy and your customer engagement at its peak. Just don’t let this detract from your core business.

3. It’s Time To Tackle New Goals

Growing a successful business over the long term requires adaptability – your readiness to anticipate and react to change. It can be easy to get complacent if you’ve consistently met and exceeded all of your goals. If you feel like you’ve hit a plateau it could be time to re-evaluate your business plan and look for your next steps.

Start by researching trends in your industry, following market leaders on social media and searching for industry specific stories using Google’s ‘News’ search tool. This will help you anticipate the ‘next big thing’ and prepare your business accordingly.

Traditional vs. High Speed Broadband

Unlike traditional ADSL broadband which is delivered through copper cabling to your premises, high speed fibre broadband is immune to interference. Standard broadband signals are vulnerable to attenuation, affecting the speed and consistency of the signal. Our new, high speed fibre connection can deliver a significantly faster and extremely reliable connection.

Broadband for Business

A fast, reliable internet connection is vital for every business, whatever your size. As your business grows, more staff, increased e-commerce sales and implementing online marketing campaigns increase the demand on your connection. An office space equipped with high speed broadband offers a host of benefits to your business:

  • Increased Productivity. A faster connection allows employees to complete tasks more easily without interruptions.
  • More online sales. Consumers no longer tolerate slow websites. Increase sales by ensuring your website is responsive and easy to use.
  • Turnaround time. Faster online ordering and invoicing will save you time so you can focus on running your business and manage cashflow more efficiently. You’ll no longer be worried about sales lost due to an unreliable connection, whether that pertains to purchases via your e-commerce site or e-mail correspondence with prospective clients.
  • Global Reach. Small businesses can now compete with large corporates by using digital marketing campaigns capable of a greater reach compared to a traditional marketing strategy and at the fraction of the price.
  • Better communication. Take advantage of features like video conferencing and cloud based services for more consistent communication between trading partners and team members.

High speed broadband is more than just a faster connection. It can empower businesses to expand and compete in global markets, or simply make daily tasks easier to complete.
